I’m in week 2 of a 3 week initiative to train the poor staff on stuff they should have been trained on all along. For the past year they’ve been “dinged” by Quality for not doing their jobs when there is no resource that tells them HOW to do their jobs! I feel so sorry for our staff I actually cried last night.

Well, it’s not perfect yet but we’re finally giving them some re-training, but for two weeks all I hear all day is that the training is fine and good, but the minute they walk out of the room, their managers are going to tell them to do it differently, the assistant managers will tell them to do it another way, and the quality people will tell them to do it another way still. Written policies will tell them to do it a different way because they’re all old.

I’m exhausted to the point of mind-snapping over this. Do you know how humiliating it is to stand up in front of a class and be told straight out that my teaching will mean nothing in the “real world” because, despite the fact the curriculum was approved by bosses all the way up the ladder, the quality people make up their own rules as they go along.

Yesterday’s 2 classes went horribly. My attitude was horrible, I let my frustration show (not at the staff but at the situation).

One quality person has already set an appointment with me next week to gripe me out, but most people won’t do that - they’ll file complaints without me knowing.

I’ve worked so much overtime the past two weeks, I’ve gotten in trouble with my bosses for fighting for what the staff really needs, the staff doesn’t have confidence in anything I say.

My job is a no-win situation daily and I don’t know how much longer I can take it.

  1. The only way that’s gonna be changed is if the Supervisors are graded on how their staff treat their patients rather than constantly looking at the bottom line.

My Pop was in a nursing home before he died. I know that the demands on nurses are horrible, but when h’ed buzz them; wait an hour for them to change his soiled garments and then have to endure their comments that his mess made them want to puke?

The funny thing was that after he died, the nursing home realized that Pop paid in cash for his care and never. EVER complained about the benign neglect absolutely shitty care he got.

I’m too fucking worked up about this even remembering it.

What kills me is that your students obviously know the care they should be offering, but are forced to ration their attention according to some corporate plan, regardless of their patient’s needs.

  2. It sounds like someone needs to get ahold of the “quality” people. If you are doing your job, why are they griping you out? I’m so sorry to hear you have to go through stuff like this.

@mike: I’m sorry to hear about the horrible treatment your dad got. :( Nursing homes can be just awful.

Luckily, our nurses call patients over the phone and offer general education, so there’s no one suffering if they can’t make a call for some reason.

Our nurses took the job because they want to teach people and help them live with their illnesses. Now they’re treated like telemarketers, and they hate it. I don’t think the company gets it that nurses have other options in employment. We’ve had eight quit in the past two weeks so far (out of 130).

@Rusty: The Q person is mad because I got so frustrated that I finally broke down and told the class how to defend themselves against QMs who don’t know what they’re talking about. This is not providing a “united front” and I was wrong to let that show. But I’m sorry - I’m on the nurses’ side!

  4. Wow - this is just not your week, is it? I’m sorry. Here’s hoping that some amazing job offer shows up!
