Aaah, this is the life! (Click for bigger images)

Setting up a home office is a lot of work, especially when:

  • You moved two years of documentation home from the office and have to go through it all
  • You’re starting a brand new job, which constitutes coming up with a whole new organization system, quickly.
  • The stupid goddamn printer/copier/scanner you ordered quit working 24 hours out of the box (never buy a Kodak printer!)
  • You forgot to buy a 3-ring hole puncher, and your preferred organization method is binders.
  • The new office chair you bought isn’t as comfortable as you thought
  • You have a 175 pound dog who won’t leave your side while you’re trying to put things together

Here’s what my corner of my upstairs loft looks like so far.

My home computer is in the cabinet in the desk, below the drawer you see on the right.  My work computer is a laptop in a docking station.  I don’t like how high the docking station makes my monitor, but not much I can do with such a small work area.  On the right is a cedar chest where I put my work printer (that doesn’t work).  My home printer is on top of the desk area until I can get a longer printer cord.

I use a KVM cable to switch between my work and home computer, so that I can use the same monitor/mouse/keyboard for both.  It took me forever to find one with USB ports - I finally had to mail order to get one!  I would think it would be a common need.  Anyone have a better solution?

Off to the side, a broken printer, a filing cabinet.  The TV armoire is on the far left, but I hardly ever use that TV.  It’s tiny!  Watching TV in the day is NOT a temptation either.

Directly to the right of my desk is a linen closet.  I’ve turned it into a work annex.  This is what you see when you look into the door…

And this is what is around the corner in the closet.  I need to buy one of those stick-up battery operated lights or something.

And there you have it!  My home workspace.

My friend Dee took me out to a delicious steak dinner at The Keg tonight.  We were in the middle of dinner when the young couple sitting behind Dee drew my attention.  First, the waiter brought out a dozen long-stemmed red roses in a vase.  Then the guy slid out of the booth and dropped to one knee.  We couldn’t hear what was going on but our waiter confirmed that he was indeed proposing.  She said yes, we clapped.  When he sat back down he was smiling and crying.  She was crying too.  Then Dee and I may have shed a tear, but only one if that, I will admit to no more!

It was a touching moment.  He didn’t make a big deal of it to the restaurant or draw attention - it was a private moment between them, in a restaurant that was obviously a special place to them.  I hope they will always be happy.

Dee said, “That’s what I want someday.  To be loved like that.”

Dee is in her 50s and looks much younger.  She’s beautiful, inside and out.  She’s been married twice.  Still, never been loved like that - where some guy would be so grateful that you said yes, that he would have tears streaming down his face.

I’ve been married once, kinda-engaged to be engaged once, and I’ve never been loved like that either.  I used to want it more than anything, but it wasn’t until Dee said what she said that I realize that I don’t even consider it something that will ever happen to me any more.

In a world full of selfishness, it was beautiful to see two people who at least today are happy, and at least today are so very grateful for each other.  It was a touching moment, and I feel honored that I got to see it.

My friend Sue (a sometimes lurker here) did a tarot card reading for me.

She said I’d be getting some job I enjoyed on the side to do for extra money (like some kind of writing/design freelance). That’s cool. I’m broke.

She said my blinders are off and therefore I could never look at someone the same way again (we all know who she is talking about)

The surprising thing is that she said I’d meet someone new in the next month or two, through family and friends, and he’d be older. We’ll see how it plays out.

She said I may even have two new men as prospects.

I don’t believe her.

Today was my last day in the office.  Monday I start my new job (at the same company) - Instructional Designer.  I get to work 100 percent from home - yay!

I spent 2 years at that company doing training, and I’ll miss some people but man I’m glad to be moving on to something else!

My friend Elizabeth - our admin at work - sent me flowers last week and took me out to a VERY expensive steak dinner.  It beat the most expensive dinner I’ve ever had by a $50 margin, easy.  I’ll miss her the most.

My friend Dee, who I met at a previous job, sent me flowers at work today.

So I have two bouquets of flowers here at home.  I’m so spoiled!

The admin Tiffany, who just got promoted herself, took me out to lunch too.

Funny - when I found out 9 days ago that I got the job, I called Yo Yo Boy right away.  He never once asked me anything about it, or emailed me a congrats, nothing.  He didn’t even care.

Yet all of these other people are so supportive.  It really shows that Yo Yo Boy never even was a decent friend.

Have you met Spudgy? I think he is quite possibly the cutest dog ever whelped.  His mom is some sort of marketing genius because she took an old Pom who likes to sleep sitting up and blows bubbles out of his nose, and made him a star.

I first ran across Spudgy on YouTube, but his website pics are the best.  Especially “Spudgy’s Adventures”.  Go check out the pics.

Oh God that dog is cute!
