Sometimes I think the majority of the world is full of manipulative, selfish people. I used to not be that way. I used to be all Ann Frank-esque: “I still think people are basically good.”
But the evidence that people are NOT basically good is really stacking up. It’s kinda like global warming - when the topic was first discussed, I didn’t want to believe the ugly truth. But when spring starts 2 weeks earlier every year and the ice caps look noticeably different in satellite photos, there has to be a day when you throw up your hands and say, “Yep. We’re screwed.”
When it comes to people, I’m almost crashed into every day by some asshole on the road, just to get to work and find out person A is lying about me behind my back, or person B says I suck… and then person C says right in front of a classroom full of other people that I don’t “understand adult learning theory” because I’ve asked her to hold her questions until I was done with my presentation, well… the scientific evidence is in. PEOPLE SUCK. (And I’m including me in with the “people” I’m talking about too. Every day I do something that in hindsight, I wish I could have handled better.)
I’m seeing life through shit-colored glasses lately, I guess.

Old Chicago is within walking distance of my workplace. Every time I go there for lunch, I’m disappointed. Either the food tastes old, or the service is slow, or the order is wrong.
I swear I’ll never go there again, but then a few weeks go by and when a friend asks, “What sounds good for lunch?” somehow Old Chicago will pop back into my head.
What is it about that place that makes one forgive it and try just one more time?
Old Chicago is the hot ex-boyfriend of restaurants. Despite my better judgment, I’m always willing to give it another chance, and I always regret doing so.

I doubt if anyone is keeping scientifically-sound statistics, but if I were a bettin’ woman, I’d bet that the divorce rate of couples who CRAM wedding cake into each other’s faces at the reception is about 98%.
There is nothing funny about a woman in a $1000 wedding dress, $150 hairdo and $80 makeup job getting assaulted by (or assaulting) her new husband at the reception. Taking your $850 wedding cake and turning it into a grade school cafeteria food fight is not only tacky, but it shows poor judgment on so many levels. Whenever I see a video of a couple doing this on AFHV, I just want to mail the bride a business card to a battered women’s shelter. And when it’s the bride acting like scum, it makes me want to call up the groom and ask him if he’s dumped the trailer trash husbandbeater yet.
